Banks Look to Internet to Draw Gen Y Patrons
The Internet is playing an increasingly important role when marketing banking services to Generation Y customers. This tech savvy generation often relies on the Internet for everything from shopping to banking. Because of these mobile customers, it has become critical for banks to offer free Internet services. I think the checkbook will be dead within 10 years. It is amazing how many people use their debit card as cash these days. Many of my friends never even consider carrying paper money in their wallets any more. Almost every fast food chain is offering thr option of paying with a credit card or debit card. Imagine when all that information is stored on your cell phone. That could really take off. Your whole bank could be on your cell.

I never have cash or checks, except for paying rent. The first place I go to pay bills is their website or via credit card over the phone. I think you're right with banking via cell phones. Wouldn't be surprised to see that shortly.

The debit card/pay by cell phone thing is getting to be pretty common here in Europe (I'm from Boston, but on vacation in the South of France - and actually writing/researching a speech on Banking and Generation Y). There's good info in a recent report by Pew Internet & American Life project. So my guess, is that as Jason said - checkbooks will be dead.
