Gen Y Urged to Rescue the Planet
With many researchers attributing global warming to the extinction of species, the melting of the polar ice caps and the creation of new strains of diseases, activists are now urging Generation Y to take action. The debate about global warming has raged for decades with supporters citing that last year’s hurricane season was the worst in recorded history and critics claiming that the current weather is simply following a pre-existing pattern dating back thousands of years. Who is right? The problem is that neither side has conclusively proven their argument, however, both sides have very influential supporters. Al Gore, former Vice President, recently released a documentary entitled “An Inconvenient Truth”, playing in select theaters, that clarifies common misconceptions with global warming. “An Inconvenient Truth” came in at #22 in the box office during its first week, only being released in four theaters. The documentary has since risen as high as #9 – Generation Y is listening.
Activist are targeting Generation Y to take action because of Gen Y’s predisposition for caring about environmental issues. Gen Yers are more likely to use energy-saving light bulbs and work to develop vegetable oil cars then any other age group, so combating global warming seems like it would be embraced kindly by Gen Y.
