Don't Bury Gen Y in Email!

As a member of Gen Y, I check my email frequently. It's almost as natural as breathing. I subscribe to newsletters, I actually even sometimes read ads which are targeted to me!

Members of Gen Y are often apt at efficiently and quickly make their way through data, but at the same time, they would rather not if it is unnecessary. Therefore, a great way to make sure that members of Gen Y won't read your emails is to over-send.

Even when the content is welcomed, some times too much can be well... too much!

So try to put some thought into where that "too much" line exists, and don't cross it. Talk to your kids or find some. Have a quasi-guerilla-style focus group. Or just put yourself in their place if you're a member of Gen Y yourself.

Gen Y may want to hear from you, but at the same time... Gen Y wants to be independent. Maybe offer them an option on how often for them to be sent when they opt-in. You are making them opt-in... right?

Does anyone really like to be buried in E-mail?

For some reason I feel like this is not a generational thing at all. Even my boss, a Boomer, stresses the fact that she only wants e-mails when they actually have something important to say.

Coming home from vacation last week w/ my family, a mix of gen-Y, X and Boomers, everyone was complaining about getting back to the office and having an overloaded inbox.

Maybe older generations perceive that because we're tech-savvy we like lots of e-mail. Like you say, that's just not true.

Here's where the line should be drawn: It you would be annoyed by it, gen-Y would be annoyed by it.

Right?
